Your marginal rate is the rate on your last dollar; your effective rate is total tax divided by income — always lower, because the first dollars are taxed at lower rates. Estimates use 2025 federal brackets and the standard deduction and don't include credits, the QBI deduction, AMT, capital-gains rates, or FICA. Not tax advice.

How this calculator works

It subtracts your pre-tax deductions and either the standard or your itemized deduction to find your taxable income, then runs it through the 2025 federal brackets — taxing each tier of income at its own rate. The result is your federal tax, your marginal rate (the rate on your last dollar), and your effective rate (total tax over income).

The bracket bar shows exactly how your income fills each tier, which makes it clear why moving into a higher bracket doesn't raise the tax on your whole income — only the part above the threshold.

Good to know

This is income tax only — it doesn't include Social Security or Medicare (FICA). For full take-home, use the paycheck calculator.

It uses the standard deduction unless your itemized total is higher, and doesn't model tax credits, the QBI deduction, AMT, or capital-gains rates.

Comparing a move? The optional state add-on shows how your combined rate changes by state.

It's an estimate, not tax advice.

Frequently asked questions

Marginal vs. effective rate?+
Marginal is the rate on your last dollar (your top bracket); effective is total tax ÷ income. Effective is always lower because earlier dollars are taxed at lower rates.
How do brackets work?+
Progressive tiers: only the income within each bracket is taxed at that rate, so a higher bracket only raises tax on the income above its threshold.
2025 standard deduction?+
$15,750 single, $31,500 married filing jointly. Taxable income = income − pre-tax deductions − the larger of the standard or itemized deduction.
Does it include FICA?+
No — income tax only. For full take-home including Social Security, Medicare, and state tax, use the paycheck calculator.
